Even then, Howard Miller understood the need to create products that would be steeped in quality and value. He expected nothing less than the best. And it was only under those strict conditions that he allowed his name to grace every clock manufactured at our sprawling facility in Zeeland, Michigan.

Wood and metal may stain, scratch, chip or discolor. The customer must exercise proper care to minimize any such damage.

Basic Furniture Care

Glass & Metal Care Tips:  Minor waviness and hairline scratches are inherent in the manufacturing of glass. (Scratches must be able to be viewed from a distance of 3 feet when the glass is in a vertical position to be deemed unacceptable by industry standards, ASTM Designation C1036-91.) The nature of handcrafted glass may have any of these imperfections, which will serve to emphasize the individuality of your piece. As with all fine glass, care must be exercised in cleaning to ensure years of lasting beauty.

Cleaning. Most commercial window products will clean and shine furniture glass. Avoid using abrasive household cleaners or coarse cloths. Most glass tops and shelves can be removed for a thorough cleaning. Heavy Objects. Exercise caution when loading items on a glass shelf. Bending or deflection in the glass signals a possible break. A sudden shock, caused by dropping a small item, can result in a shattered shelf. Scratches. Avoid sliding objects across glass tabletops or shelves. Accessories should be lined on the bottom with felt to avoid grinding edges into the glass. Cleaning Metal. Should metal surfaces become dirty, wash with a mild soap and water solution. Buff surfaces with a paste wax or furniture polish for more shine. Cleaning. Most commercial window products will clean and shine furniture glass. Wood Furniture: Furniture Polish. It is essential to dust and clean furniture regularly. Furniture polish removes soil, eliminates dust and provides protection to guard against accidental spills. Most commercial polishes will protect and preserve the finish on furniture.

Oils. Furniture oils gently clean and condition wood while providing a rich, natural luster. They also penetrate and condition drying and cracking wood.

Direct Sunlight. Protect furniture by arranging pieces out of direct sunlight. Steady, prolonged exposure can result in fading, hairline cracks or in some cases darkening.

Temperature Changes. Avoid exposing furniture to temperature extremes. Do not place furniture near heating or cooling vents, fireplaces, humidifiers or open windows. Localized heat damage can occur when hot dishes, pots or irons are placed directly on finished surfaces. Utilize pads, trivets and coasters to protect the surface.

Leather Care and Cleaning:

The use of "Old Time" remedies such as Neatsfoot Oil, Mink Oil, Saddle Soap, and other similar products, are no longer beneficial to the leather used in upholstery applications. In fact, these products can cause harm to the leather by accelerating deterioration of the fibers of the leather and the finishing products used in their production. Each piece of leather furniture should have a Cleaning Code that tells you how to clean and care for the leather.  Read and understand the directions.

Regular cleaning and replenishment of natural oils, will keep the leather, and its finish, in good condition for a very long time.  There are leather care kits that will provide you with everything you will need to thoroughly maintain your leather.  Oils in the leather will dry out and evaporate even when the leather is not regularly used. To keep the leather soft and flexible, dirt and grime which have accumulated on the surface must be removed and the oils be replaced.  Do not use soaps or alcohol-based products to clean leather. These will dry out the leather and shorten its useful life. Always check the Cleaning Code before using any solution on leather

Using the proper cleaner for your leather is very important. Leather must be treated carefully, using the correct products that are made especially for leather.  Use only cleaners which are Ph Balanced for perfect compatibility with leather. This preserves the original softness and feel of the leather, while preventing drying out of the leather.

Wipe off surface dirt every two weeks with a clean white cloth dampened with water or as directed by the Cleaning Code. This will remove dirt and grime that can get in the pores of the leather, creating an abrasive effect that will damage your leather furniture. Dust or vacuum your leather furniture frequently using a crevice tool on the seams. Apply a leather conditioner in accordance with the Cleaning Code as often as recommended, usually twice a year. Follow the directions on the bottle.

Most spills can be removed very easily:

  • Blot spills gently with a clean white cloth as soon as possible.
  • Do not use a colored cloth or the dye may transfer to the leather.
  • The cloth may be dampened with water but do not over-wet the leather.
  • In accordance with the Cleaning Code, you may use a solution of mild soap (like Ivory or Neutrogena) on a slightly damp cloth to wipe any stains.
  • Wipe the spill gently, do not scrub the area excessively.
  • Use another clean white cloth to rinse any soap reside, then dry the leather with a dry white cloth.

Leather Match, By-cast Leather, Vinyl and other like materials, require similar care.

Upholstered Furniture:

A pure bristle clothing brush, lightly covered with dry-cleaning fluid, will remove lint, dust and animal hair from upholstered surfaces.

Sponge napped fabrics  with a textured washcloth, dipped in a mixture of vinegar and water (stir 1 tbs. vinegar into 2 cups of cold water) and then ring dry as possible to freshen their appearance.

Vacuum plush fabrics at least once a week; brushing merely distributes the dust.  Hold a steam iron about 1" above the surface of crushed velvets to raise the nap.

Spots and stains need to be cleaned as soon as possible. For greasy marks, such as lipstick, oils, or chocolate, use a dry cleaning solvent. For non-greasy stains, mix 1/2 tsp. liquid detergent with 1 qt. water, shake it up, and apply just the suds in small amounts, blotting between applications. For combination stains, use the detergent mixture first and the solvent next. Always follow label directions for dry cleaning solvent. Test the product first on a hidden part of the fabric.
Keep on hand an all-purpose stain-removal guide so you can properly treat any of the myriad substances that can stain your upholstery.

Steel: Wash steel furniture only occasionally. The first sign of rust use a wire brush and then touch-up paint to keep it from spreading.

Iron: Wash steel furniture only occasionally. The first sign of rust use a wire brush and then touch-up paint to keep it from spreading.

Wicker: Natural wicker should be on a protected porch or patio out of direct sunlight. Wipe down the frame with a mixture of water and liquid detergent when it needs cleaning (generally twice during the season).

Synthetic Wicker: Wipe down the frame with a mixture of water and liquid detergent when it needs cleaning (generally twice during the season).

Aluminum: When needed wipe frames with a mild mixture of water and liquid detergent. Frequency is determined by your environment.
